The monument was designed in 1948 by MacLean Marshall, a Rome sculptor.
Alan Smith's Re-Dedication Speech
On behalf of the membership of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4911, I welcome you all here today to re-dedicate this landmark honoring the Lindale WWI and WWII soldiers who gave their lives fighting for our freedoms which we enjoy today. We will not play Taps nor say a prayer as this is a moment that our fallen comrades would be proud of and it puts a smile on their faces as they look down upon us today.
Mr. Jack Morgan generously donated this land to our Post a few months ago. VFW member Charles Lee took the “bull by the horns” and began coordinating the effort to restore the memorial to its original condition. We were privileged to have Mr. Bob Cescutti volunteer his time and skill to repairing the stonework. Mr. Cescutti and Mr. Wayne Casey worked over sixty hours on this project. Bob was the perfect man for this job - 61 years ago, as a teenager, he assisted his father in constructing the monument. David Mayberry brought his equipment and donated his time to pressure washing the memorial. United Penecostal Church of Coosa Valley and pastor Greg Bridges allowed us to use their electrical meter to power our equipment. Mr. Don Hicks generously gave us free access to his water throughout this entire project.
Landscaping was made possible by Greg Clark at Three Rivers Nursery as well as by Ladies Auxiliary to VFW Post 4911, Ray and Avris Jones and Ginny Kinne. Turf Grass of America donated sod which has been placed around the monument. Lowe’s Home Improvement gave us generous discounts. Mr. Earl Kinne has pledged financial support to maintain the lighting of the monument. We have received donations from Evans Ace Hardware of Lindale and Silver Creek Pharmacy as well as from individual members to help us continue maintenance on the memorial for many years to come.
This has been a privilege for our Post to be a part of and we can never fully express our appreciation to Mr. Jack Morgan for allowing us this opportunity.
